Track 3

Wireless Networks, Applications, and Services
Presented by Barney Dewey

Barney Dewey has worked in wireless for more than 30 years. When he started, it was called radio. In this session, he will begin by examining the trends in the wireless marketplace and present market size projections. The “Wireless Hype Cycle” will be discussed and the keys to successful applications will be examined throughout the session. He will then review wireless technologies and roadmaps—what capabilities are available when—including 2.5G, 3G and wireless LANS up to 100 Mbps. The top wireless service providers (the “carriers”), their technologies, and strategies are then discussed. He will review the carriers that he believes will be the most successful and why. The issues and success factors for Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) are reviewed.

Japan has the most successful three wireless data services in the world. Among these is Japan’s successful i-mode service. The Japanese services help contrast the failure of WAP in North America and Europe providing important lessons and highlighting key issues for successful wireless applications in the rest of the world. Dewey explains how wireless Java (J2ME) and Qualcomm’s BREW application environments will fix the problems of WAP and make wireless services successful. The pros and cons of Symbian, Palm OS, Pocket PC, Stinger, J2ME and BREW are reviewed.

Location services is a hot new area that is often described as the savior of wireless mobility services. Come to the session to find out what issues are developing that may slow location services implementation to a crawl. Find out why Dewey believes Bluetooth will “change the rules” for many in the wireless industry and how it will affect future wireless applications and services. Dewey will feature “Active Content” as the key to making the wireless Web explode into a must-have service that will fetch high service revenue for device manufacturers and network providers. Active Content is the missing link to success for wireless services. As a leading wireless analyst, Dewey takes a balanced approach and explores many sides to the complex issues in this exciting topic of wireless applications and services.
