Barney Dewey has worked in wireless for more than 30 years. When he started, it was called radio. In this session, he will begin by examining the trends in the wireless marketplace and present market size projections. The “Wireless Hype Cycle” will be discussed and the keys to successful applications will be examined throughout the session. He will then review wireless technologies and roadmaps—what capabilities are available when—including 2.5G, 3G and wireless LANS up to 100 Mbps. The top wireless service providers (the “carriers”), their technologies, and strategies are then discussed. He will review the carriers that he believes will be the most successful and why. The issues and success factors for Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) are reviewed.

The Japanese services help contrast the failure of WAP in North America and Europe providing important lessons and highlighting key issues for successful wireless applications in the rest of the world.
